Spotlight on Winifred Goldring

February 11 is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. So, today I highlight a real gem in the field, Winifred Goldring. Goldring was a professor of paleontology at Wellesley College and later became the first woman State Paleontologist in New York -- and the US. During a 7-year study of crinoids, she documented 25 families, 60 genera, and 155 species. Of this, she identified 2 new families, 18 new genera and 58 new species. She was also the one to first describe stromatoporoids (fossilized sponges). She wrote extensively in paleontology papers and books and was an outspoken proponent of equality in the workforce. read more about her here:https://www.revolvy.com/topic/Winifred%20Goldring

Winifred Goldring's numerous accomplishments include a monograph describing the many crinoids of New York, like these from the Mahantango Formation. You can read her book for free here: https://ia801704.us.archive.org/27/items/devoniancrinoids00gold/devoniancrinoids00gold.pdf
